For a character-based reader like me, this book is pure nirvana. It brought me to my knees. After finishing the last page, I wanted to reach out to every literary reader I know and say, “You must read this.†And that’s what I’m saying now, in my review.I’m not even going to get into the plot. Suffice to say that two NYPD cops – Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope – end up living next door to each other, raising their families in a quiet town close to NYC. Eventually, the families become linked by love, struggles, and tragic life events. How this occurs is for the reader to discover. What’s more important are the themes. The book is about how one thing leads to another which leads to another and eventually, how the last fallen domino skids far from the neatly toppled row. It’s about how we cannot escape the damage done to us in our past, but instead, can confront it to build a semblance of a future. But most of all, it’s about the power of love and redemption: how we can lose our footing, lose our path, and in some cases, even lose our mind, but still be worthy of forgiveness. It’s also about what it means to be a success: not what we accumulate or what we accomplish but how many people love us and believe in us when it really matters. The genuineness of these damaged and striving characters is so real that I found that soon after starting the book, my emotions were intertwined with theirs.I don’t know who Mary Beth Keane is or where she came from, but I do know she has her finger on the pulse of the human heart. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
I bought this book because it was heavily advertised as a summer 'must read' and because it was supposed to be about 2 cops starting out in NYC in the 1970's. That's not what it's about at all. This book is a coming of age story that might have been written by Joyce Carol Oates or some good YA writer. The adults in this book are stick figures, shadows. It's all about Kate, who in my opinion is a not very interesting girl approaching high school. Maybe because it's been decades since I've read a book about the trials and tribulations of youth, I was not able to identify with any of the characters. I wouldn't have finished it at all if I hadn't paid so much for it. Try it if you're looking for a book about girl/young adult feeling her way into adulthood. Don't look for depth.
Not far into ASK AGAIN, YES, by Mary Beth Keane, I felt that tug of war a great book always gives me—wanting to race ahead to the story’s end but wanting to slow down, to savor and reread those perfect phrases and flash-bulb images that make you think yes, that’s exactly how that feels. You’ll find examples on every page because anyone who’s read Mary Beth Keane’s earlier novels (The Walking People, Fever) knows she knows her way around a sentence and a paragraph. (For a wonderful example of one that is both, check out Anne’s confessional aria in the middle of page 206.)Keane has taken a familiar story (the family drama), set it in the most prosaic of places (a suburban town), and peopled it with extraordinary, ordinary characters. They’re ravaged by the impact of mental illness, stymied by cultural limitations that keep them from seeking the help they so obviously need, and tested by infidelity and alcoholism. But they decide to love each other and forgive each other when it’s difficult to do so. These extraordinary, ordinary people easily could have chosen enmity and resentment—and felt every righteous justification under the sun for doing so. Or they simply could have turned their backs, walked away. (One person does, arguably inflicting far more damage than the human wrecking ball at the center of the story.) But these flawed, confused, sometimes selfish/mostly generous-hearted people struggle through their anger, arrive at acceptance, and choose not to let the threads of family, and friendship, and love unravel. These people are so real that when you close the cover of the book (a brilliant design, by the way), it will be like a screen door swinging shut behind you— at the end of a long evening—on people you’ve come to know very well.Highly Recommended. Don't miss Ask Again, Yes.
Ask Again, Yes6/7/2019 0 Comments PictureMary Beth Keane’s novel ASK AGAIN, YES feels like it is faraway but it’s not. It’s as close as your next-door neighbor. In fact, it’s about next-door neighbors. As close as you can get. Two families who become entwined with each other’s lives over the course of decades. They are not likely to become untangled from the intricate web that has been woven between them. Two men start out as rookies in the NYPD. Then branch out to the suburbs where great expectations await. It’s not the two officers who form a bond but their children. The families will be divided suddenly, tragically. Left with a sadness so profound, it is palpable.Once you delve into the book, you will understand why Keane chose to span the story over the course of time. Her characters deserve to come to life. You will want to see them grow, what becomes of them.ASK AGAIN, YES is childhood friendship, marriage, the immigrant’s experience, forgiveness, family drama and all that it encompasses. The lingering effects of a catastrophe weigh heavily on those involved, true, but isn’t there a part of us all that remains ever hopeful.
This book was the best book I've read this year. The story was engrossing and the writing was detailed without being convoluted. The descriptions could get a bit long but ultimately the writing was so engaging I wanted to soak up every word. Deals delicately with addiction and mental health but ultimately the story is relatable in that it's about people who are just trying to make the best of their lives. I found myself thinking about the characters throughout the day. I loved the shifting of perspectives and the way it told multiple stories at once. I would highly recommend.
